Emily Koester is a postpartum doula who works to guide and support you in the days and weeks after the birth of your baby/babies. She provides evidence-based education on breastfeeding, soothing and sleep, practical suggestions and
demonstrations and a listening ear. Her goal is to support you in a way that helps you relax and gain the confidence, skills and resources that enable you to embrace and enjoy this time in your life.
Her belief is that every new mother, and every experienced mother with a new baby, deserves extra physical and emotional
support in the postpartum time - however long that may be. In many cultures around the world and in some of our own communities, women have support built into their family systems and lifestyle, giving them time and space to bond with and nurture their new baby. There are other people to take care of household tasks, watch siblings, cook meals and generally provide for the family. Women and families who do not have relatives and/or friends who are able to help out in the weeks right after birth are faced with handling all of these important tasks virtually alone or with only intermittent help. It can feel overwhelming and stressful. This stress - if not addressed by getting adequate support - can contribute to problems with breastfeeding and mother & baby bonding, postpartum depression, disharmony between spouses and a rough transition for an older sibling. Research by anthropologists and psychologists shows that these
issues are rarely found in cultures where there is good support for a mother with a newborn.
This is a fleeting yet perfect time to enjoy every moment of your newborn's precious life, to recover from birth, to regain energy for the work of nurturing your baby and yourself, and ultimately to make a happy
start on this new path in your life. The work of a postpartum doula allows you these gifts to your baby, yourself and your family.
